Author Interview: Kacie Ji

Posted by Charlotte Kirton on 19th February 2016

Meet Kacie Ji, author of Demigoddess 101!

Hello Kacie! Welcome to the Finch Blog.

Please give us an insight into what to expect from your new release, Demigoddess 101.

Demigoddess 101 is about snarky, teen Ava Goddard and what happens to her after she realizes that she’s not exactly like other girls her age. She’s thrust into a new world inhabited by gods and goddesses and nothing could be better…until she realizes that one of them is out to get her. She has to rely on her wits and her new friends to figure it out and stop them before it’s too late not only for her, but for the world.

What’s harder, naming your characters, creating the title for your book or the cover design process?

Character names usually come to me before I even start writing the story. It’s rare that I don’t or that I even change them as I work. The cover design is pretty tough because everyone has an idea of what their cover should look like but seeing what comes back from the design team is always exciting. So I’d have to say that coming up with the title has to be the hardest part. Coming up with something that’s catchy and at the same time captures the essence of the story that is agony.

Do you have any advice for all the aspiring writers out there?

Write for yourself. Don’t worry about trends or who’s writing what. Write what you would want to read and write it well because you can be sure someone else will want to read it too.

If you could travel forward or backward in time, where would you go and why?

That’s a tough one. There are just so many things I’d want to see and do. If I could go forward I would love to see how humanity will turn out, so I’d jump ahead a few hundred years (and maybe do research for a story I have percolating in my head). If I could go back in time I would love to attend one of Cleopatra’s lavish parties or much further to see what colours dinosaurs really were.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

LOL! I’ve has this conversation so many times! I have a tendency to get bored with things very quickly so I would need powers that keep changing. So probably powers like Rogue from the X-Men (but without hurting the other person) or Peter Petrelli from Heroes would be great because I would have a never-ending array of powers.

If you could sequester yourself for a week somewhere and just focus on your writing, where would you go?

I would love to be somewhere swaying in a tropical breeze on a hammock under the shade of a palm watching the ocean as I write. Failing that, anywhere with room service would be fantastic!

What do you have planned for the future with Finch Books?

I’m currently working on the sequel for Demigoddess while I’ve got several other ideas on the backburner so you can be sure you’ll be seeing more of me in the years to come!

About Kacie Ji:

When she’s not writing or sleeping, Kacie can be found discussing plot twists with her cat who usually seems to enjoy being a part of the process. On the days he’s not, she usually finds herself wishing there was a way to mainline coffee while she writes, deletes and tweaks until what she sees makes her smile.

You can take a look at Kacie's Website and follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

Demigoddess 101 blurb:

When Ava Goddard see toga-clad people that no one else can, she knows her life is about to change.

After first seeing these strange people, Ava quickly jumps to the conclusion that she is A) going crazy or B) she’s always been crazy but is only now realizing it. That is until she actually meets one of these hallucinations and learns that she’s a demigoddess. Not only that, but she’s the daughter of Jupiter himself.

Ava soon learns that being a demigoddess isn’t as fabulous as she first thought it would be. Her life is invaded by gods and goddesses who want to befriend her, including a frightening but ironically protective God of Death, a vengeful Queen of the Gods and a snarky dryad in Ava’s tree. And on top of it all, she has to deal with her mother, an overdramatic best friend and a soccer playing potential boyfriend as well.

Worse still, there’s a goddess who is lurking in the dark and has been biding her time for the past several millennia, waiting for her chance to take over—and she’s just found Jupiter’s one weakness.

Ava.
